INTERESTING AND RARE CAST IRON CLOCK DESIGNED BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. Referred to as a three-wheel clock. We believe this example to be a 19th Century clock made from Franklin’s designs. The cast iron wall clock is mounted to a conforming edge molded wood back. The clock constructed of heavy cast iron and painted predominately yellow and green over an earlier blue paint. The back plate has a lyre form with dog heads at top flanking a top finial of rising sun and crescent mood. Bottom with a drop acorn finial. Steel movement has three inner wheels and carries a long cast iron pendulum, which is round with a butterfly in center. The one weight is cast iron with decorative shape. Cast iron pulley in rosette form has replaced chord. Round cast iron face is quite decorative with pierced work painted in ivory, yellow and green. SIZE: Clock without backboard is 22” h. Dial is 11-1/4” dia. CONDITION: Repainted. There is a copper added shaft for hands, two hands are present but it is unknown if they are original. Unknown working order. 9-28078 (1,000-1,500)
