CHINA TRADE INLAID CAMPHOR SHIP’S DESK. Circa 1840. In three parts, the rectangular top with molded edge fitted with a long top drawer opening to an interior of sliding compartments centering an adjustable writing slope above three aligned short drawers, all with ebony stringing and fitted with recessed brass handles. Upper section fitted with two banks of drawers, each with two drawers. Sides with brass carrying handle. Each bank of drawers on a molded plinth raised on ring turned turnip feet. Case with mid molding and ebony stringing. Drawer dividers are reeded. Lovely example of a desk of the period, probably made in either Canton or Hong Kong. SIZE: 33″ h x 49-1/2″ w x 20″ d. PROVENANCE: Originally from a Calais, Maine Estate. CONDITION: Desk retains original finish, well alligatored and crackled. Structurally piece is intact with original brass hardware, however it is missing two inlaid brass escutcheons. Feet are original, backboards are original. Some losses to right rear side facing of the upper case at the back, small shrinkage crack at right front corner facing and left side facing at midpoint. Needs a good cleaning which will restore it to its original condition. 9-91818 (3,000-5,000)
