JAMES PHINNEY BAXTER (1831-1921), Portland, Maine, “IDYLS OF THE YEAR”. Circa 1884. This custom leather bound volume of handwritten poems with book plate from the personal library of James Phinney Baxter, numbered 2330, accompanied by 30 lovely original watercolor illustrations. The title page, “Idyls of the Year, by J.P.B., In Memoriam”. The dedication page showing an original mounted photographic portrait of a young girl and entitled: “To Alba. Among the Angels”. Illustrated by Mrs. M. A. Longley and so marked. Authored by the father of a former governor of the State of Maine. The text of poems in a fine manuscript calligraphic hand as a memoriam to Alba (possibly daughter or relative), profusely illustrated with detailed moving watercolors, each poem titled with a month of the year and a season, each accompanied by an illustration appropriate to the poem. The story line following the chronological passing of the months and seasons of the year and, allegorically, a parallel passage through time and life. This title was published in a much smaller format (7-inches) by Hoyt, Fogg and Donham in Portland in 1884, that edition being Library of Congress Number 41-38928. SIZE: 13-3/4″ x 9-3/4″. PROVENANCE: This book was found in North Carolina and little is known of its past ownership. CONDITION: Very fine overall with wear to bindings. 9-90968 (800-1,200)
