MAINE FEDERAL FIGURAL BIRCH TALL CASE CLOCK. Dial and works by Silas Hoadley, 1786-1870. Case with arch molded crest and pierced fretwork centering three brass ball and spire finials above the conforming astragal glazed door flanked by swelled colinetts opening to a painting wooden dial with berry spandrels, floral garlands and gilt songbird. Dial marked “S. Hoadley, Plymouth. Original wooden works, the waisted case fitted with rectangular thumb molded door on a box base with shaped and tapered French feet. SIZE: 92″ h overall x 12-1/2″ throat w x 9” d. PROVENANCE: Inside of door with paper label which reads as follows “This clock was one of the first clocks in Canaan. The clock originally consisted of the works only in which set on a shelf. At a later date the cabinet was made by a cabinet maker in Skowhegan. This clock was owned by my great grandfather William Frederick Weston, son of the first settler of Skowhegan, Joseph Weston. Then to his son of the same name, and then to his son George N. Weston, and after that to me.”. Signed “E.W. Dunbar”. According to the current owner, he purchased the clock from Mr. Dunbar in the mid 1900’s. CONDITION: Case in very good condition overall. It has been refinished at some point. There is some shrinkage splitting on the seams of the box base, door missing its lock, backboards all original. Dial has dryness and loss of paint due to flaking, appears to be attached to the wooden works in the original unaltered fashion. Wooden works appear to be in good condition. Glass door retains its original glass however there is a crack at upper quarter of the glass pane. 9-91817 (2,000-4,000)
