A FINE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, SIGNED KEZIAH JEFFS, MRS WETHERELLS SCHOOL, BYFIELD, DATED 1821. Executed in a variety of green, blue, pink, and brown stitchery on a cream linen ground with a central panel of floral-filled urns, stylized pine trees, perched birds, and dogs beneath lines of alphabet and pious verse, all above the third panel wrought with pious verses centering a tree flanked by floral-filled baskets within a border of scrolling floral vinery. Signed at bottom Keziah Jeffs aged 12 years November 16 1820 Wrought this sampler at Mrs Wetherells School Byfield May 21 1821. The attribution to Massachusetts relates to “Mrs Wetherells School Byfield”. We recognize the line, “Fear God. Honour the King” has a distinctive British flavor, 44 years after the American Revolution. We are unable to determine anything further as to the origins of the student, the school, or the country. SIZE: Sight: 13-1/2″ x 12″. PROVENANCE: Found in a home in the Boston area. CONDITION: Some staining and minor weakness in edges, some small holes in ground.
