UNSIGNED (19th Century) BURNING OF THE SHIP “AMERICA” OFF NICARAGUA. Large oil on canvas scene shows the steamer “America” burning. Research indicates that the ship burned off Nicaragua in 1869. The “America” was built in 1854 in Ontario, Canada. 1683 tons at a cost of $250,000. Built for the Great Western Railway Company of Canada and used to link Hamilton, Ontario with Oswego, New York. A complete history of the ship is included with the painting. Ship takes up most of the painting and is seen in bright moonlight against a deep blue sky. Side view shows large flames erupting at and above deck line. Many passengers are seen jumping off and swimming towards safety. One stack and mast is fully engulfed and ship appears to be headed for disaster. Unsigned and unframed. A finely detailed painting. SIZE: 38” x 55”. CONDITION: Very good.
