THOMAS BUTTERSWORTH SR. (British, 1768-1842) “AN ARMED SCHOONER OFF RAMSGATE”. Unsigned oil on canvas scene shows two-mast schooner with partial sails up and having sixteen people aboard. Seven guns are seen along side of boat. Foreground has small two-mast sailboat with four people aboard. Ship sails from left to right having harbor scene with many ships masts seen. White cliffs with small building atop. Reflections of the boats are seen in a white to green to black ocean. Mostly cloudy sky with some blue and hints of a rising sun. Housed in a replacement gilt gesso decorated frame. Small name plaque with title and artist affixed. PROVENANCE: A CT estate. SIZE: 12” x 17”. CONDITION: Very good with some restoration and inpainting. 9-94606 (10,000-15,000)
