JAMES E. BUTTERSWORTH (American, 1817-1894) SCHOONER IN STORMY SEAS. Outstanding oil on panel scene shows black hulled three-mast schooner sliding down a large wave going right to left. One front sail and one sail on middle mast is up. Others are rolled. One lifeboat is attached to back deck. One red flag is flying on middle mast. No visible name on ship. Wonderfully rendered storm clouds and rain coming from the left side. Center sky area over ship has edges of dark clouds and bright light coming through. Light to dark greenish sea. A lightning bolt zigzags out of left most dark cloud. Signed lower right “J.E. Buttersworth”. Painting is presently unframed but shows where frame was which has an outline of layered dirt. This outline partly obscures the end of the signature which, when taken off may reveal a date. This painting is in untouched condition. REFERENCE: For similar subject matter, pages 113; 114 and 115 of “J. E. Buttersworth 19th Century Marine Painter by Rudolph J. Schaefer”. SIZE: 8” x 12-1/4”. CONDITION: Very good. Some very light scratches below lightning bolt, otherwise very good with surface grime. 9-94403 (17,500-27,500)
