SMITH CIVIL WAR CARBINE. Cal .50. 21-1/2” part oct bbl. Made by Mass Arms Co. The sling ring bar screw is replaced. Two faint cartouches appear on the left side of the stock. This carbine was issued to William Plogar of Co. D, 7th MO. State Militia Cavalry. Plogar was illiterate and his records are not clear. This is noted in that company’s order book in the National Archives Record Group 94. SN 2,0001. CONDITION: Gray patina overall with light to heavy pitting. Wood has been lightly cleaned and the cartouches are only lightly visible. There is a 1” chip missing from the right side of the forearm. Action is tight, bore lightly pitted. 4-49785 FS148 (2,000-3,000)
