VERY RARE 18TH CENTURY INDIAN MAID EMBROIDERED MOOSE HIDE POUCH. Made of moose calf hide. Pouch is worked with silk like thread and retains remnants of the colored silk like fabric trim. Decorated with large red flowers and green leaves. The flap is decorated with lions. This type of work was originated by French nuns in Canada during the 18th Century who taught this work to the Indians of the region. Nicely mounted in a contemporary matted shadowbox. SIZE: 23” h x 17” w (case only). Pouch is approximately 15-1/4” h x 9” w. CONDITION: Some loss of material and decoration and slight deterioration of the early moose hide pouch.
