ATTRIBUTED TO NEWELL CONVERS WYETH (American, 1882-1945) “A STUDY FOR THE CLIPPERS”. An unsigned study for the First National Bank of Boston’s mural entitled “The Clippers”. The mural is now in the lobby of the Bank of Boston building in Boston. Wyeth did not keep records of all the versions of his sketches but a complete set of presentation sketches exists and the whole set is owned by the bank of Boston. One other painting is known and is a study for the “Tramp Steamers”. This oil on canvas shows two clipper ships coming toward and away to viewers right. Blue sky with billowy white clouds and green sea with one seagull. The only difference is the missing silhouette of another clipper on the horizon at the right side of the painting. Letters from Christine B. Podmaniczky, Associate Curator of the N.C. Wyeth Collections at the Brandywine River Museum and Timothy Jayne of Oxford, Pennsylvania accompany painting. Housed in a gilt molded wood frame. SIZE: 38” x 26-1/4”. CONDITION: New stretcher, relined. Very good. 9-95268 (30,000-40,000)
