RARE IVES “HOOK-BEHIND”. This most comical 19th century toy is depicting an elderly country woman in a horse-drawn cart being chased after by a black youth. The elderly lady has a stamped brass face and is attired in her original clothing; the black youth has cast iron legs, a composition head and also has his original fabric clothing. Clockwork mechanism propels the toy forward while the horse appears to be galloping and the black youth appears to be running. Remnants of paper label on rear of lady’s seat. SIZE: 17″. CONDITION: Overall original, untouched condition except old repair to rear of cart where boy’s hands are attached. Black light inspection reveals paint touch-up to this area as well as minor re-soldering of horse hitch to clockwork motor.
