AMAZING RACING MOTORCYCLE BY FISCHER W/ OB. An astonishing, breathtaking, as well as whimsical early German tin windup motorcycle with rubber tires, chain driven, hand painted, and the original box with a lithographed racing scene on the lid. Not often does one stop in their tracks to view such a toy and be amazed by that said toy. The framework of the motorcycle consists of thin pieces of tin resembling wrenches and a bullet styled fuel tank. The driver, precariously perched, and appearing to be flying off the back of the motorcycle, he has accelerated, racing towards the finish line. The colorful box lid portrays a bandstand containing a plethora of people waving and cheering him on as the dust flies up from the rear tire. The motorcycle appears to be completely 100% original after close inspection by magnifying glass and black light as well. Mechanism is in working order. The bike comes directly fresh to the market from a European estate and would certainly be a highlight to any collection. SIZE: 7 1/4″ l. CONDITION: Overall extremely fine original condition. One handlebar detached from hand, minor wear to paint, flat spot on one rubber tire. Cardboard box is intact, showing some warpage and minor distress to one flap with small 1/2 piece missing. 8-76153 JL (20,000-30,000)

RARE, LARGE GORDON BENNET RACE CAR. Intrinsically, this is one of the greatest race car toys ever manufactured!! Not only does this toy have charm, proportions, and allure, the history alone makes it a great toy as well as a historical icon. Manufactured by Gunthermann in the early part of the 20th century, and finely lithographed in white with gold highlighting, and large front head lamps as well as two hunched over drivers in pursuit of the first place victory. Clockwork mechanism is intact and when the toy is wound the race car lunges forward by a chain drive mechanism attached to rear wheels. This activates the bellows within the engine compartment while alternating the front wheels’ direction left to right, avoiding those bumps and potholes in the road before it. A similar model sold in the November 2005 Julia auction for an astounding $48,300!! This toy, fresh to the market was consigned from a family who had it in their possession for over 38 years. SPECTACULAR J & E STEVENS PROFESSOR PUG FROG’S GREAT BICYCLE FEAT MECHANICAL BANK. Upon close examination very little wear is evident in the depository section and the bottom of the frog’s chin is devoid of any wear. Other exceptional points to this example are the incredible amounts of paint on the bottom of the frog’s chin, Mother Goose’s tongue, and the incredible amount of gold and red highlighting on the lever, book, and raised lettering, which tend to be candidates for the most wear. The bicycle itself is amazing with nearly all of its original silver paint. KYSER & REX ZOO BANK. A most amusing small bank with attention paid to detail. Comical and far-fetched in the sense of why would wild animals be in one’s house? When pressing the monkey’s face in the upper dormer the shutters pop open revealing a lion and bear. Polychromed in brilliant colors, and although small, it is still a delightful bank. PROVENANCE: York County, Pennsylvania house sale. SIZE: Base measures 4″ w. CONDITION: Pristine, lacking trap. Though not particularly rare, it is in very rare condition. 1-6118 MC (3,000-5,000)

J & E STEVENS I ALWAYS DID ‘SPISE A MULE MECHANICAL BANK. An outstanding boy on bench Spise a Mule with red base and white lettering. MAGNIFICENT J & E STEVENS CHIEF BIG MOON BANK WITH RED BASE. Perhaps the finest example of this bank known to exist. Totally untouched, uncleaned, and yet the colors of this bank are truly astonishing. From the pond, to the copper highlighting, right down to the sharpness and brilliance of the blue stream and flowers, this bank is perhaps the culmination of every collector’s desire and dreams. This bank was initially found in its original box, but along the way the two got separated. It’s obvious the bank has not seen sunlight in the last 100+ years because of the brilliance of the red base and silver highlighting. In this cataloguer’s mind, this is my number one pick. It would be hard to place a monetary value on this bank because of the scarcity of its condition. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lloyd Ralston, private collection. SIZE: Base measures 10″ l. CONDITION: Near mint+, some wear on frog’s chin where it scrapes the pond and fish. There is a small casting crack in bank from where it was originally screwed together as shown in photo. If your taste demands the finest then you must have this one! 1-6117 MC (15,000-25,000)

J & E STEVENS “FOOTBALL” (A.K.A. CALAMITY) MECHANICAL BANK. CALAMITY) MECHANICAL BANK. A real delight for even the most discerning collector who demands the finest in condition. A most appealing bank for all bank collectors as well as sports aficionados. This has it all: rarity, condition, action, appeal, and the intricacy of the castings. When the coin is set in place, the lever is depressed, the fullback lunges forward as the right and left tackle advance in a circular motion, stopping his advance. This bank is most susceptible to damage not only to the figures being broken off, but also to damage to the gears on the underside but this extraordinary example is devoid of any of these frequent problems. Once again, J & E Stevens’ attention to detailing, paint and intricacy of casting is exhibited with this bank! Extremely rare and difficult to find, especially one such as this without any flaws and with such great paint. This bank would make even the most fastidious collector very happy. PROVENANCE: Ex-Norman Perry Collection. SIZE: Base measures 7 1/2″ l. CONDITION: Pristine to near mint, trap included, but not pictured. 1-6119 MC (30,000-50,000)

$18,400.00

J & E STEVENS MAGICIAN MECHANICAL BANK. A stellar example infrequently found with almost all of the rarer yellow flocking intact on stairs. When the lever is depressed the magician lowers his hat onto the table, covering the coin. At which point, the trap opens, unbeknownst to the viewer, the coin slides under the table and into the magician’s legs, and is deposited into the stage area below. When hat is raised, it seems as though the coin has disappeared. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lloyd Ralston, private collection. SIZE: Base measures 6 1/4″ l. CONDITION: Pristine to near mint. This bank shows little to no wear to facial area, which is commonly chipped, and the attractive light blue staging area has almost all black lettering intact! 1-6123 MC (14,000-18,000)

$24,150.00

J & E STEVENS BOY SCOUT CAMP MECHANICAL BANK. A marvelous example in pristine to near mint condition with tremendous amounts of copper highlighting to the bank. Perhaps one of the finest examples known! The great condition allows you to see detail not apparent on most examples found. When one studies the bank closely, they observe the teepee, the owl in the tree, the camp fire, the scout behind the cauldron, and another emerging from the teepee. Even the lever retains approximately 95% of the paint, which is usually the first to wear. PROVENANCE: Ex-Norman Perry Collection. SIZE: Base measures 9 7/8″. CONDITION: Pristine to near mint; extremely rare in this condition. 1-6122 MC (20,000-30,000)

EXTREMELY SCARCE J & E STEVENS DENTIST MECHANICAL BANK. Choice examples in this condition rarely come to the market. Not only is this bank desirable, but also comical. One of the banks referred to as the “Pedestal Series” designed by Charles A. Bailey, this Dentist is using his strength to pull a molar from his black patient sitting in the chair. With great effort, he manages to yank the molar out, stumbling backward, falling back onto his gas bag as his patient falls head over heels backwards. This is complete with original gas bag and original paint. PROVENANCE: Massachusetts dentist’s collection where it has resided for the last 40+ years. SIZE: Base length 9 1/2″ l. CONDITION: Pristine with only a small area of paint loss on gas bag and a replaced spring on the underside. 1-6126 MC (20,000-25,000)

INCREDIBLE J & E STEVENS FUNNY CLOWN (A.K.A. CLOWN ON GLOBE) MECHANICAL BANK. A dazzling example with one of the strongest facial paintings intact that I have ever seen on this bank. The blue ball with gold highlighting is similarly dazzling, and the mocha colored base is just plain stunning. Rarely does one find this bank with such vivacious coloring intact! As typical with Stevens’ red, it has a tendency to fade. The arms and chest have slightly faded, yet the rear of the bank is still brilliant. All in all, this is a wonderful example. PROVENANCE: From a Massachusetts estate. SIZE: 9″ h. CONDITION: Some minor chipping to clown’s legs and where legs meet globe, but still would consider this bank to be pristine to near mint. 1-6121 MC (10,000-20,000)

J & E STEVENS BASEBALL (A.K.A. DARKTOWN BATTERY) MECHANICAL BANK. A choice example of a very desirable bank, this bank appeals not only to bank collectors, but also sports collectors and collectors of bank memorabilia. The vibrancy of the paint on this special example is amazing…the reds, the yellows, the blues, and whites, along with the extensive amounts of highlighting on the letters and insignificant wear to the paint on the playing field. Although the batter’s shirt shows some paint loss, the caps to all three players are exceptional for this bank. One can understand why there are many Darktown Batteries. The action alone is great. With extraordinary timing, the pitcher with penny in hand throws the coin through the air, the batter swinging and missing, and the catcher retrieves the coin in his mitt, and deposits the coin into the receptacle below. PROVENANCE: Purchased from New York estate. SIZE: Base measures 9 7/8″ l. CONDITION: Pristine, an original, casting flaw to pitcher’s left leg. 1-6127 MC (8,000-12,000)

EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE J & E STEVENS BREAD WINNERS MECHANICAL BANK. A rare example, almost never found in this condition. A classic example of toys and banks of the time period mimicking the social attitudes and prejudices of the period. This bank depicts the poor Irishman, the working Jewish man, and the wealthy emblazoned with “Send the Rascals Up” and using “Monopoly” as the springboard…what a statement! Although the appeal of the bank was not apparent to children, for whom mechanical banks were originally intended, and hence not a huge commercial success. As such, few survived and the collector is most intrigued and most desirous of owning a bank of this rarity. Polychromed with bright colors, the design and statement made by this bank appeal not only to bank collectors, but also to collectors of political memorabilia. PROVENANCE: Originally acquired from an Indiana household estate. SIZE: Base measures 11″ l. CONDITION: Near excellent example with much shelf dust and dirt and in need of a careful cleaning, but the result should be spectacular. Please view inset photo of Irishman’s hat showing left side cleaned and right side with original grime. A substantial amount of paint remains, including gold lettering. Inset photo shows very very old repaired crack to torso but hidden under Irishman’s arm. 1-6120 MC (30,000-45,000)

EXTRAORDINARY ARCHIVE OF MATERIAL RELATING TO THE FAMOUS BURLEIGH ROCK DRILL INCLUDING PATENT MODEL, PATENT PAPERS, STOCKS, ETC. This extraordinary collection of material acquired many years ago by the consignor’s father directly from the Burleigh family of Waterville, Maine, relates to the development, patent, and utilization of the famous Burleigh rock drill. Charles Burleigh was born in Waterville, Maine in 1824. In his youth, he left his home and eventually resided in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Around the mid 1860s, he was instrumental in developing a special rock drill run by compressed air that was critical in the completion of the famous Hoosac Mountain Tunnel which was completed sometime around 1877. Burleigh, after completing the tunnel and purportedly saving the State of Massachusetts literally millions of dollars in man-hours, had to sue the State of Massachusetts to collect his payment. He was a very creative inventor, and his company went on to produce many improvements and other inventions relating to drilling; and the incredibly successful drills were acquired and used throughout the world. An obituary column about him in 1906 cited Burleigh as single-handedly creating the downfall of the value of silver in that his drills made the mining of silver so much more prolific that glut of silver and gold for a period of time came onto the market and drove down the price. This large lot includes a group of four or five wooden patent models for the famous drills and air compressor. At least one of the patent models still has court documents attached to them indicating they were utilized in the court case against the State of Massachusetts in the late 1800s. Also included are various original patent papers from the U.S. Patent Office regarding some of Burleigh’s inventions. The patent models are constructed in what appears to be walnut and brass parts; at least one apparently depicts the model of the famous Burleigh drill and improvements as well as a model of the famous compressor used to run the drills. In addition to the models, a large assortment of promotional cabinet photos illustrating the mining drills and carriages for the Burleigh Rock Drill, also a series of four large photographs depicting the Hoosac Tunnel at various points. Also included, at least two partially filled stock books for the Burleigh Rock Drill Company–the earliest stock dated 1867. Another stock book with some of Burleigh’s stock sheets together with a miscellaneous sampling of various other stocks for mining companies, railroads, etc. Also included are a series of professional engineers’ drawings for some of the drill components, a copy of an illustration and profile of the Hoosac Tunnel illustrating the tunnel entrance and exit etc., together with depictions of Burleigh’s equipment, and a scrapbook filled with numerable newspaper clippings about the successful utilization of the famous Burleigh drills, a copy book of letters mostly in the 1880s, and a plethora of letters, affidavits, etc., which probably relates in part to Burleigh’s lawsuits. A couple of early documents dating to as early as 1812 relating to the Roger’s family of Waterville, Maine together with a parchment calligraphy depicting the family register for the Rogers family dating back to 1791. Also, a small group of hand pamphlets, some in foreign languages that illustrate and promote the use of the famous Burleigh drill. The Burleigh drill was featured in the World’s Fair of 1876, and a plate depicting the Hall of Mines at the World’s Fair is included. All in all, an extremely interesting grouping which will undoubtedly create a fascinating story once all the correspondence and material has been compiled and reviewed. These other patent models which date back to the 1860s-1870’s are particularly interesting. Rarely does a group of patent models of this vintage come on the market with so much related material–a truly fascinating lot. SIZE: Patent model approximately 23″ h., patent model as well as the drill approximately 26″ l, large cabinet views of the Hoosac Tunnel measures approximately 16″ x 13″. CONDITION: This is a lot that has been stored in an attic for probably over 100 years. Some pieces are damaged and soiled, and some are in very good condition. While the patent models may be nearly complete, there is no way we can determine for certain without knowing completely what these models should look like. They are not guaranteed to be totally complete. However, they are in generally good condition retaining much of the original finish on the wood, etc. 1-6027 (3,000-6,000)
