WILLIAM CALLCOTT KNELL (British, -1879) PAIR OF SHIPPING SEASCAPES. Large outstanding pair of oil on canvases depicting different types of ships in choppy seas next to coastal landscapes with windmills. Both identically framed with their original 7” wide gesso decorated gilt frames having a nautical motif including anchors, rope and ships wheel. Rectangular frame with curved top inside corners. In the foreground of each painting are smaller fishing boats with people and equipment. In background larger boats are seen all under a blue and cloud sky. Greenish choppy ocean with white capped waves. Small tag on back indicating artist and subject matter. Signed lower left “W. C. Knell”. PROVENANCE: Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Hawaii. SIZE: 32” x 52”. CONDITION: Relined, very good with some restoration and inpainting. 9-95073 (18,000-22,000)
