ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE NORTH LAND. Outstanding oil on board portrait of the steam powered passenger ship North Land. Ship sails from right to left and takes up most of the painting (28-1/2”). Extremely crisp, vibrant colors have been kept pristine behind glass. Flat quartered oak, old and possibly original frame. Ship flies American flag at stern. Ship flag and flag signifying the Eastern Steam Ship Co. (ESSC). There is a crowd of people at the stern, seven visible life boats, two stacks with smoke billowing, eighteen seagulls, blue sky with white clouds and a wonderfully rendered white capped blue ocean. Signed lower right “Antonio Jacobsen 1914 31 Palisade Av., West Hoboken N.J.”. The North Land originally was built for the Maine Steam Ship Company who later was bought by the Eastern Steam Ship Company. It ran between Portland and New York City carrying passengers and some freight. PROVENANCE: From a fine Maine home. SIZE: 20” x 36”. CONDITION: Original, untouched, near excellent.
