WILLIAM PIERCE STUBBS (American, 1842-1909) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE AZARIAH SEARS WITH INSCRIPTION. Oil on canvas ship portrait of a three-mast clipper ship with black hull in full sail going right to left. Name pennant off center mast and U.S. flag off back mast. There is a lighthouse off bow and low land mass off stern. Six figures are seen on deck. Signed lower left “W.P. Stubbs”. Housed in an antique black and gold painted frame. INSCRIPTION: On back of canvas in beautiful script “The ship Azariah Sears Built 1885 Bucksport, Maine Likeness Painted for Capt. William Morrissey”. To our knowledge, the only painting by this artist with an inscription on back. SIZE: 20” x 30”. CONDITION: Original canvas with inpainting mostly in the sky and the sea.
