CHINA TRADE NEEDLEWORK PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “ONEIDA”. The fully rigged three-mast sailing vessel with sails up sails left to right. Ship has a black hull and sails through a blue silk background with dark blue waves. A banner above the ship gives name. An American flag flies off stern. The Oneida was lost at sea on June 24th, 1870. It was bound for Hong Kong and collided with a British mail steamer. Its home port was Yakohama, Japan. It was built in the New York Navy Yard in 1861 and fought in several Civil War battles including the Battle of Mobile Bay where it was the ship behind Admiral Farragat. It was assigned to the Asian fleet in 1870. Housed in a modern gesso decorated frame with gilt liner and velvet matte. SIGHT SIZE: Within matte. 14-1/2” x 18”.
