ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (American, 1819-1905) “THE FOREST, ADIRONDACKS 1883”. Oil on canvas mounted on panel scene shows large stag in a mountain landscape. The stag stands atop a grass and wildflower ground and takes up most of the painting. In the background are forested mountains and a beautiful colorful sunset. Signed lower right with artist’s monogram/cipher and “25/12 883”. This is one of several Tait compositions of deer with an Adirondack location. Housed in a plain gold wood frame. SIZE: 30” x 24”. CONDITION: Area in sky has 1” x 1/4” chip and cracking. Some inpainting to bottom edge. Surface grime. Otherwise good. 9-94428 (4,000-6,000)
