ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (American, 1819-1905) “THE LAST WAR WHOOP”. This is the painting that was used for Currier’s lithograph, which is listed as No. 3457 in Conningham’s List. Oil on canvas scene shows cowboy on brown horse with revolver in hand looking down at an Indian with hand to mouth with black horse beside. Prairie landscape with blue sky and white clouds. Signed lower right “A.F. Tait NY 1855”. Housed in a reproduction gesso decorated gilt frame. SIZE: 19-1/2”x 26”. CONDITION: Relined, some inpainting. Very good. 9-95282 (30,000-40,000)
