RARE STATE OF MAINE TALL CLOCK BY BENJAMIN SWAN, AUGUSTA, MAINE. Mahogany case has quarter round turned columns ending in brass capitol ends. The rectangular door is banded with mahogany veneers and molded edge. Decorative brass escutcheon plate. Inset bottom mahogany panel. Rests on four cutout feet. Hood with tapering round columns with brass ends. Simple fretwork top having three brass finials. The dial signed “Benj Swan, Augusta”. Moon phase dial, four corners painted with fruit. Eight-day brass works. Pendulum, weight and key present. Inside of door “Made by Benjamin Swan, Augusta 1815”. “1895 Offered $150 for this clock”. Benjamin Swan (1798-1867) moved to Augusta, Maine and was the apprentice of Fredrick Wingate. PROVENANCE: From a Delaware Home. SIZE: 93” h to top of finial x 18” w x 9-1/4” d. CONDITION: Clock has had some restoration including tightening up case and veneers. Dial has some chipping, especially to moon phase dial. Old uneven finish. 9-96034 (8,000-10,000)
