IMPORTANT MID-19th CENTURY AMERICAN U.S. NAVAL SHIP’S COMMISSIONING PENNANT. A rare Civil War period flag of red, white and blue with 13 5-pointed stars and nearly 30’ long. Fashioned, according to U.S. regulation as a long tapering pennant, having dark blue wool bunting canton 8” at the hoist and tapering down to a point over its 30’ length. Over the course of the canton are 13 5-point stars hand sewn in cut outs spaced evenly and on alternate planes. The field is of two strips of read and white wool bunting divided evenly over the course of the fly. The hoist is reinforced with a canvass band marked “30F” in period ink and “GBS” in period pencil. A two strand twisted hemp rope is attached. An important naval ship’s flag-rarely seen. CONDITION: Excellent. The flag is very strong with only minor holes and loose stitches mostly near the fly end. 4-49171 CW (1,200-1,500)
