$9,775.00

RARE AND OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE 11-STAR 1ST NATIONAL FLAG. This handsome flag and lot 544 were bought together and are almost identical. They are unusual for a Confederate flag in two respects; first the use of precious brass grommets at the top and bottom and second, the atypical large band or stripe at the bottom. Anything brass was precious to the Confederacy and typically those grommets were not used on flags. Large handmade grommets of this type are the type that was made during the Civil War (by the U.S.) and many have been found in excavation digs and are not like the later models used during the Indian wars, etc. The flag is constructed of wool bunting of canton and bars, stripes are constructed from cotton. Hoist is 2-1/4″ heavy cotton canvas with two large approximate 1″ grommets at top and bottom. This flag, 11-star Confederate flag and naval streamer appear to have been made by the same hand. Accompanying this flag is a letter from one of the nation’s leading textile experts, Fonda Thompson, of Textile Preservation Associates. Fonda’s findings are that the textiles and threads are all Civil War era materials. SIZE: 35″ on the fly x 26″h. CONDITION: Flag shows no signs of use and appears to have always been stored. Colors are bright and the textile has only minor insect damage scattered on the bunting. A beautiful, bright, colorful and highly presentable flag of the period. 4-49166 (5,000-10,000)
