AUTOGRAPHED CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPH OF CONFEDERATE PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS. Nice signed CDV of Jefferson Davis in 3/4 left pose, taken by the Richmond photography studio of Vannerson and Jones in 1866 while he was a prisoner of war at Fortress Monroe, in Virginia. After his capture, he was imprisoned there from 1865 until 1867. He was indicted for treason in 1866, but was released on $100,000 bond in 1867, which was secured in part by Horace Greeley, as well as other influential northerners. CONDITION: Card is 3-15/16” x 2-7/16” overall, with applied 3-7/16” x 2-3/16” image. There are several tiny round stains, otherwise excellent, with crisp corners and bright gold double borders. Signature is bold and unfaded. 4-50204 (7,000-8,000)
