IMPORTANT REVOLUTIONARY WAR PRESENTATION RIFLE CONNECTED TO CAPT. LEVI SPAULDING. Cal. 60. 30-1/4” round bbl. This rare rifle was made by Steven Wallis in England after the Revolutionary War and carrying the issue No. 29 on the trigger guard. This rifle carries and inscription in fancy script “Capt Levi Spaulding / Lyndebough / 1776” on the patchbox. Accompanying the gun are numerous documents concerning the decent of this rifle in Spaulding’s family until the 1950’s and from that time in hands of the family to whom it was given. Levi Spaulding organized a company of soldiers in Lyndebough four days after the battle at Lexington and Concord. He was the Captain of the 9th Co. 3rd NH Regiment at Bunker Hill under the command of Col. James Reed. He fought in other battles including Trenton and Valley Forge up to Yorktown in 1889. After the war he returned to Lyndebough and served in various town positions, as well as state representative and representative to the General Court. He moved to Otsego County, N.Y. around 1805 and according to family information, he received this rifle as a commemorative of his service during the Revolutionary War. He died in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1828 and is buried at the Spaulding family plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery near the Bunker Hill Memorial monument. This monument was designed and erected by U.S. Congressman Eldridge Spaulding, his grandson. NSN. CONDITION: Smooth gray patina overall with scattered light pitting. The brass has a dark patina. There are numerous dents and scratches at the wrist, mostly from hanging in a rack. Ramrod is a replacement. Lock is fine. 4-49185 (20,000-30,000)
