EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE J & E STEVENS BREAD WINNERS MECHANICAL BANK. A rare example, almost never found in this condition. A classic example of toys and banks of the time period mimicking the social attitudes and prejudices of the period. This bank depicts the poor Irishman, the working Jewish man, and the wealthy emblazoned with “Send the Rascals Up” and using “Monopoly” as the springboard…what a statement! Although the appeal of the bank was not apparent to children, for whom mechanical banks were originally intended, and hence not a huge commercial success. As such, few survived and the collector is most intrigued and most desirous of owning a bank of this rarity. Polychromed with bright colors, the design and statement made by this bank appeal not only to bank collectors, but also to collectors of political memorabilia. PROVENANCE: Originally acquired from an Indiana household estate. SIZE: Base measures 11″ l. CONDITION: Near excellent example with much shelf dust and dirt and in need of a careful cleaning, but the result should be spectacular. Please view inset photo of Irishman’s hat showing left side cleaned and right side with original grime. A substantial amount of paint remains, including gold lettering. Inset photo shows very very old repaired crack to torso but hidden under Irishman’s arm. 1-6120 MC (30,000-45,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2006 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
