JOHN WOOD DODGE (American, 1807-1893) “PORTRAIT OF MRS. EMMA C. PRESTON”. The miniature watercolor on light cardboard portrait of a young woman with long curly brown hair, wearing a Victorian brown dress with lace shawl. Fancy drop earrings and lace collar are in white. Back of painting indicates sitter, painter and “Chicago, Feb 7 1871”. REFERENCE: Antiques Magazine, article on John Wood Dodge, November 2003 Issue. The article mentions Dodge moving to Chicago in 1870 and also mentions Dodge’s trademark as seen in the right corner of this painting as a shadow-like smudge. He was known as “The Premier Miniature Portrait Artist of his Time”. Housed in a walnut deep frame with painted wood matte with oval window. SIGHT SIZE: 8” x 6”. PAPER SIZE: 8-1/2” x 6-1/2”.
