UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) PAIR OF MOOSEHEAD LAKE, MAINE SCENES. Oil on canvas scenes, both by the same hand in a primitive style. One shows large cliff sided mountain, Mt. Kineo? descending to large lake with different boats. A town is seen on far shore with buildings, two people are seen looking out over view under large trees on left side. The other with similar mountain cliff, lake and boats, with mountain in background. Foreground shows an area of forest with cut down trees. Watercolor beach scene shows a wide beach with long arbor like shelter which appears to be constructed with leafy branches held up by a post and cross beam supports. This provides shade to a number of people. Behind this is seen a tall flagpole and grass covered sand dunes. Two women in colorful beach attire sit next to group of branches on a sandy beach in foreground. Left hand side has white foam crashing waves all under a blue sky with three seagulls. Signed lower left with conjoined initials “AT Bricher” and dated “1879”. It is possible that this is a scene along Rockaway Beach. DANIEL RIDGWAY KNIGHT (American, 1840-1924) “AT THE WELL”. Spectacular oil on canvas scene shows two young maidens in country dress standing near a stone well with copper pot and two clay flower pots. The tall wire work stand holding the pulley for water bucket. A large bale handle pail and earthenware jug sit on a dirt path which one of the girls stand on. A large colorful flower garden encompasses most of the bottom 1/3 of the painting. It is encased by a stone wall which separates the property. Another young lady with basket under arm walks down side hill. The scene overlooks a large river lined with houses. A popular scene of Knight’s and one of his best. Signed lower left “Ridgway Knight Paris”. Housed in a spectacular 7” wide deep gesso decorated frame with silver plated artist tag with title. Hammer Galleries, New York label on reverse. PROVENANCE: Purchased from Hammer Galleries in 1981. Included is a letter from 1981 of Hammer Galleries guaranteeing authenticity. Also a letter of provenance from same indicating that the provenance was Private Collection to a New York Private Collection to Hammer Galleries. Outstanding large oil on canvas Dutch scene shows three large fishing boats at low tide being outfitted by a man in a cart and four figures. KIMBALL NORTHEAST HARBOR MAINE”. Kimball was a turn of the century fashionable gift and furnishing store in the fashionable community of Northeast Harbor, Maine. Framed in silver to gold painted oak frame. Hardwick was born Nova Scotia, Canada and later settled in Massachusetts was a pupil of Triscott, Luiton and Blummers. Geological Society, 1972. The watercolor that is his is in the collection of National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D. C. HARRY G. AITKEN (American, 1867-1952) “LATE AFTERNOON SUNLIGHT”. Oil on canvas scene in pastel colors shows checkered hillside with cultivated fields, sloping to light blue body of water. Large trees line fields. Signed lower left “H.G. Aitken 41”. Attached to back stretcher is an annual exhibit label from the Syracuse Museum of Art with title and artist. Aitken was a designer and head of the Decorating Department for the Onondaga Pottery Company (now Syracuse China). He studied with John Carlson, H. Lee Ross and William Lester Stevens.
