J & E STEVENS BASEBALL (A.K.A. DARKTOWN BATTERY) MECHANICAL BANK. A choice example of a very desirable bank, this bank appeals not only to bank collectors, but also sports collectors and collectors of bank memorabilia. The vibrancy of the paint on this special example is amazing…the reds, the yellows, the blues, and whites, along with the extensive amounts of highlighting on the letters and insignificant wear to the paint on the playing field. Although the batter’s shirt shows some paint loss, the caps to all three players are exceptional for this bank. One can understand why there are many Darktown Batteries. The action alone is great. With extraordinary timing, the pitcher with penny in hand throws the coin through the air, the batter swinging and missing, and the catcher retrieves the coin in his mitt, and deposits the coin into the receptacle below. PROVENANCE: Purchased from New York estate. SIZE: Base measures 9 7/8″ l. CONDITION: Pristine, an original, casting flaw to pitcher’s left leg. 1-6127 MC (8,000-12,000)
