AUGUSTUS WARD LOOMIS COLLECTION OF ARTIFACTS FROM CHEKIANG PROVINCE, CHINA. 1845-1849, China. This collection of 42 items includes various block printed and other paper books, various eyeglasses, horsehair fly swatter, several pipes of various description, silk slippers, woven baskets, ink stone with case, flute and brush holder, three carved figures, letter from A.W. Loomis to his brother Edwin, handwritten letter inquiring about employment, and other unnamed items. This lot is accompanied by an inventory listing each item. Augustus Ward Loomis and his wife Mary Ann were Presbyterian missionaries in Chenkiang Province, China during the time this collection was acquired. The collection represents items from everyday life in provincial China and affords a glimpse into domestic life in this area in the mid 19th century. SIZE: Flute: 24-1/2″ l. Carved figures: 3-1/2″ to 6-1/2″ h. PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of Augustus Ward Loomis. Deaccessioned from the Cornell University Library, Ithaca, New York.
