ALFRED THOMPSON BRICHER (American, 1837-1908) BEACH WITH FIGURES AND ARBOR. Watercolor beach scene shows a wide beach with long arbor like shelter which appears to be constructed with leafy branches held up by a post and cross beam supports. This provides shade to a number of people. Behind this is seen a tall flagpole and grass covered sand dunes. Two women in colorful beach attire sit next to group of branches on a sandy beach in foreground. Left hand side has white foam crashing waves all under a blue sky with three seagulls. Signed lower left with conjoined initials “AT Bricher” and dated “1879”. It is possible that this is a scene along Rockaway Beach. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame with white matte having gold inner liner. PROVENANCE: Found in a New Jersey home. SIGHT SIZE: 9-1/4” x 20-1/2”. CONDITION: Frame and matte as is, some light foxing. Otherwise very good. 9-99988 (8,000-12,000)
