MODEL 1850 OFFICER’S SWORD. 28” blade marked “C. Roby & Co. W.Chelmsford, Mass”. Blade is etched with patroitic motifs, tag with sword reads “Foot Officer’s sword, C. Roby & Co., Mass. Made prior to 1863, during Civil War Blade broke on battle field—picked up by confederate soldier and fixed by local blacksmith—used by the Confederate Army—Found in a barn in Tenn.” CONDITION: Grip wrap is missing as is wire with exception of fragment of sharkskin and one strand twisted wire protected by pommel cap. Grip otherwise is bare carved wood. Last approximate 12” of blade are replaced by a rather crude blacksmith weld. Hilt, pommel and blade show a rustic “barn” type patina. 4-50144 (500-700)
