AMERICAN EAGLE HEAD SWORD BELONGING TO CONFEDERATE GENERAL. Inscribed “Capt. A. Gallatin Blanchard/USA”. Blanchard was born in Massachusetts. He attended West Point where he was classmates with Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston. He later moved to Louisiana and there became a member of the Louisiana militia and during the Mexican War served with distinction at the Battle of Monterey and Vera Cruz. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Confederate Infantry and later was promoted to Brig. General. Sword is classic American fine bald eagle head, silver-plated brass, scabbard mount silver-plated. Blade is decorated with blue and gold patriotic motifs. SIZE: 32-1/2” blade. CONDITION: Sword in generally fine overall. Crack in fluted bone grip. Silver plating on hilt and scabbard mounts are about 90-100% complete. Blue and gold decoration is about 50% plus intact. Gold original leather scabbard has various glue repairs. Photocopies of some information regarding Blanchard accompany this lot. 4-49251 (4,000-8,000)
