INSCRIBED PRE-CIVIL WAR U.S. MODEL 1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD: 1st COMPANY, G.L. FOX GUARD, 1859. A very nice example of a pre-war militia officer’s U.S. regulation sword. This sword is a U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword of European (German) manufacture. The sword has a 31” lightly curved single edged blade of steel with etched designs over 3/4 of both faces. The designs contain military trophies, floral sprays “U.S.” and a spread winged American eagle and shield. The ricasso is stamped with a Solingen, Germany makers mark (two escutcheons) on the ricasso. The hilt is regulation style of cast brass, gold washed, the grip of wood covered with sharkskin and twisted brass wire wrap. The scabbard is of black leather with brass furniture. The front of the top mount is engraved; “Presented to/Capt. E.J. Fearon/by the Members/of the 1st Co. G.L. Fox/Guard/February 28th 1859.” A cursory search of militia and Civil War records did not turn up a listing for this officer. With a little diligence, the state of origin for this militia unit can be determined and the name most likely found. CONDITION: Very good. The blade has very strong etching with spotty dark areas mixed throughout. The surface is free of active rust. The hilt is fine retaining much gold wash and the grip excellent. The scabbard is strong with a very well executed and hidden repair about 4” below the middle mount. 4-49455 CW (2,500-3,000)
