HISTORIC CIVIL WAR SWORD AND EXTENSIVE ARCHIVE OF CAPTAIN JOHN H. GALLAGHER, 106th PENNSYLVANIA. An important collection all related to John H. Gallagher who enlisted as a private in 1861 and rose to the rank of Captain during his Civil War career followed by postwar service in the Regular Army. During his career he advanced to Lt. Col. and Colonel of the Pennsylvania National Guard. This important group consists of Gallagher’s U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber accompanied by a very large archive of his Civil War and post-war military papers, commissions, general orders, muster rolls, etc., and photographs. The sword is a standard regulation cavalry saber, manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb, inspected and dated “1862.”

A partial description of the accompanying archive and photographs are as follows: Large Victorian style scrap book containing various newspaper clippings, mostly related to the Battles of South Mountain, Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation; about 33 pages with tipped in material. Ledger book, inscribed “This book is the Property of Col. John H. Gallagher 106th Penna. Vet. Vols. Residence 516 Federal Street Philada Penna.” And inscribed “Letters and Communications”. A large ledger book of about 123 pages filled out with handwritten copies of correspondence and letters including a hand written record of Col. Gallagher’s wartime service. The remaining pages are blank. Tipped in is a hand colored albumen photograph of Capt. Gallagher in a full standing studio pose in uniform leaning on his sword. Philadelphia photographer’s mark at the bottom and two revenue stamps on the reverse. A first edition copy of “History of the One Hundred and Sixth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Corps. 1861-1865” by Joseph R.C. Ward, D.D.S. (Philadelphia 1883). Also included is a copy of “The Life, Campaigns and Services of General McClellan the Hero of Western Virginia! South Mountain! And Antietam!” (Philadelphia 1864). Inscribed in the front “The Property of John H, Gallagher, 1st Sergt. Co. “A” 106th Regiment Pa. Vols. March 1sr, 1864” A framed post-war photograph of Colonel Gallagher in civilian clothes and framed. A dark blue silk re-union ribbon stamped in gold “Philadelphia Brigade/106th /P.V./ July 4th 1866.”Large archive of military papers including, supply orders, muster rolls, promotion papers, general orders, discharges, Pennsylvania State commissions as Lieutenant and Lieutenant Colonel, a CdV of the 106th regiment flag. Also included is his partly printed commission for Gallagher as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Veteran Volunteers, April 9th 1866. Written in old English style calligraphy on vellum. Several discharge papers. A 106th Pennsylvania Commission. Large commission for Gallagher as 1st Lieutenant 32nd Regiment signed by Andrew Johnson President and Edwin Stanton Secretary of War, 1866. Large Presidential commission for Gallagher Captain 32nd Regiment of Infantry signed by U.S. Grant, President (original signature) of the United States and John Hawkins, Secretary of War dated 1868. Also included is a large colorful framed memorial listing the personnel and battles of Company A of the 106th PA. The long list of engagements includes many of the fiercest battles of the war, including Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. Gallagher enlisted in the 18th Pennsylvania Infantry in April 1861. By August he was appointed 1st Sergeant in the 106th PA, Philadelphia Brigade. He became 1st Lt. June 1864 and appointed Captain in January 1865 prior to his muster out in June. Following the war he re-enlisted in the Regular Army as 1st Lt. 32nd U.S. Infantry, rose to Captain in September 1868 and mustered out January 1, 1871. He died January 2, 1872. CONDITION: Very good. The sword is in untouched, uncleaned condition, all markings are clear. The blade has some surface rust and the scabbard and hilt are dark with patina. The grip is fine. The archive and photographs are in excellent to fair condition overall. Most papers are average with a few foxed, stained or suffering from minor losses due to handling and storage over the years. 4-49036 CW (5,000-8,000)
