IDENTIFIED COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER-FRANCIS CRAIG, 6th INDIANA CAVALRY. The identification for this Colt revolver comes from the Order Books of Company L, 6th Indiana Cavalry. A photo static copy of these order books accompany the revolver which clearly list this revolver SN 129785 as assigned to Private Francis Craig, Co. L. Standard .44 cal Colt Model 1860 Army revolver-6-shot rebated cylinder, iron frame, brass trigger guard and walnut grip. All serial numbers appear to match on metal parts except cylinder where not visible. Organized at Indianapolis, Ind., February 23, 1863, from the 71st Indiana Infantry. Company “L” organized September 1, 1863. Their service during the war includes; Cumberland Gap, Tenn. Action at Lenoir Station and Campbell’s Station. Siege of Knoxville, Atlanta (Ga.) Campaign, Battle of Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, Chattahoochie River, Stoneman’s Raid, Nashville and Dalton (Ga.). Regiment mustered out September 15, 1865. During the war the regiment lost during service 4 Officers and 66 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 201 Enlisted men by disease for a total of 273. CONDITION: Good. The revolver is mechanically operational but very loose. Metal surfaces have been heavily cleaned but have aged back to a dull gray, mottled appearance. The grips appear to be original but have been drilled and plugged in the center on both sides. The trigger guard is slightly bent. 4-49610 CW (1,000-1,300)
