WILLIAM LOUIS SONNTAG (American, 1822-1900) MIST IN THE MOUNTAINS. Large oil on canvas scene shows a mountain backdrop half obscured by a foggy mist. A lake valley with cascading stream, trees in red and green foliage, a flock of birds over waterfall with rock and grass foreground. All under a bright blue sky. Partial Frost & Adams label to stretcher. Housed in an outstanding regilt antique frame. Signed lower right “W L Sonntag” and dated. It is thought by some that this may be a scene of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, the Carter Notch in New Hampshire or just a rendition of the grandeur Paradise Lost. SIZE: 31-1/2” x 28”.
