FINE & RARE ENGRAVED JAPANESE SILVER COVERED CUP AND STAND. 18th century, Japan. Finely engraved with bands of geometric design alternating with chased bands of flowerheads. Covered cup fitted to a footed tray stand, similarly decorated. Foot engraved with stylized foliate guilloches. Lid fitted with foliate engraved berry knop. WEIGHT: 2lb 12oz. SIZE: Overall: 6-1/2″ h. Bowl: 5-1/4″ dia. Stand: 7-1/4″ dia. PROVENANCE: Consigned by the granddaughter of General & Mrs. William Crane. Originally belonging to both Lois Whitin Crane, wife of Brig. General William C. Crane of Leesburg, VA who were avid collectors of Japanese art & antiques. Together the lived in Japan with their three children while General Crane served as the Military Attaché to Japan from 1933-1937. General Crane served as a Commanding Officer & Chief of Staff on various assignments including the Allied Force Headquarters in Northern Africa & Italy, and retired after serving as the last Commanding Officer of Fort Devens, MA.
