FINE ENGRAVED JAPANESE FOOTED SILVER BOWL. 18th century, Japan. Surface finely engraved with diaper patterns on fish roe ground. Body engraved with scrolling chrysanthemum flowers and Tokugawa crests. WEIGHT: 2.97lb. SIZE: 2″ h x 12” dia. PROVENANCE: Consigned by the granddaughter of General & Mrs. William Crane. Originally belonging to both Lois Whitin Crane, wife of Brig. General William C. Crane of Leesburg, VA who were avid collectors of Japanese art & antiques. Together the lived in Japan with their three children while General Crane served as the Military Attaché to Japan from 1933-1937. General Crane served as a Commanding Officer & Chief of Staff on various assignments including the Allied Force Headquarters in Northern Africa & Italy, and retired after serving as the last Commanding Officer of Fort Devens, MA.
