DOUBLE GOURD COVERED JAR. Tao Quang mark and period (1821-1850), China. Falang Tsi ware. Lemon yellow ground with stylized lotus flowers, handles of iron red in form of jui-i scepters with gilt accents and jeweled with turquoise enamels. Top with gilt rounded finial surmounting an open lotus flower with floral elements on a lemon yellow ground. Bordered by lei wen or thunder meander in pink on turquoise ground. Interior of jar turquoise colored, gilt edge with pink jui-i shaped heads on turquoise ground. Decoration of enamel scenes of scholars in mountain landscapes in blue and green tsung style within fan shaped reserves. Lower register are acanthus leaves on turquoise ground with a further meander border in pink. Foot turquoise glazed with white area with 6 character tao quang mark with archaic characters. Old label Cheong Kee & Co. (The Curios House) established 1918 Coleman Street, 1st Floor, Corner of Hill Street, Singapore No “9” (written in pen). Size “colored vase” (written in pen). SIZE: 12″ h. PROVENANCE: Dr. William Evans Sherlock Flory b. Canton OH 4-25-1914 d. Woodbridge VA 4-27-1991. Pre-deceased by his wife Anna Putney Randolph Flory. Dr. Flory graduated from Wooster College in Ohio. Received his Masters and Ph.D. from Duke University. He held a law degree with a specialty in International Law. He worked for the State Department from approx. 1942 into the early 1960’s. He held various positions including being head of the Fisheries Unit in 1947. He attended numerous international conferences on Marine Resources, many of which were held in the Far East. In 1949 he attended the Indo Pacific Fish Council Meeting which was held in Singapore. CONDITION: Very good. Knop with wear to enamel. 7-72722 (15,000-20,000)
