LUCIAS A. BRIGGS (American, 1852-1931) AN AMERICAN FRIGATE OFF THE COAST. Watercolor ship portrait shows a three-mast frigate sailing left to right in calm water. An American flag is seen off the stern and several deck hands are seen. Several sails are seen in front of a city landscape dotted with church spires and large domed capital building. Signed lower left “LA Briggs”. Housed in a fine gilt molded wood frame with gray matte having inner gold liner. Briggs is listed in the Dictionary of Marine Artists as working in Boston in 1894-96. SIZE: 17” x 22-1/2”. CONDITION: Light water stain in lower left corner, otherwise very good. 9-90970 (600-800)
