REED ORGAN MUSIC BOX WITH AUTOMATED FIGURES. Outstanding and absolutely fresh to the market. This French reed-playing barrel organ music box is believed to be circa 1790s and features three papier-mâché automated figures with wooden limbs against a finely painted French village scene with a windmill, cattle, a stream, and a country village in the background. Consists of a fine wood case with glass panels to view the action. When activated, the figures execute a series of head and arm movements. The artist deftly paints at his canvas, while the musician strums his guitar and the lady smells her bouquet of flowers and nods in approval. Plays 9 different tunes. Purchased in 1948 by the current consignor and kept in a clean, smoke-free environment. In 1966, the internal workings were cleaned and one tooth from one of the cylinder drums was repaired by the musical instrument conservationist from the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. A wonderful and rare box with provenance. SIZE: 16 1/4″ w. x 22″ h. x 15 1/4″ d.(plus crank). CONDITION: Artist missing tip of one shoe, case has replacement glass, otherwise near excellent. 1-6387 AT (12,000-18,000)
