RARE MERRILL ARMY RIFLE WITH BAYONET. Cal .54. 33” round bbl marked “J.H. MERRILL BALTO. / PAT.JULY.1858.” on lockplate and operating lever. Lockplate also has a second line “APL.9.MAY21-28-61”. There is a sharp “LB” cartouche on the left side of the stock. The 19-5/8” Yataghan blade bayonet is unmarked except for serial number 8623. It is in a leather scabbard with brass fittings. SN 8165. CONDITION: Fine with over half of the brown finish on bbl. The casehardening colors on the lock and action have mostly turned gray or dark with some scattered light surface rust. The brass has a mellow patina except for the patchbox which has been lightly cleaned and is beginning to tone. The edges of the wood are sharp but there are a few dents and scratches to the rear of the lockplate. Action is fine. The blade of the bayonet has been cleaned but some spots of light pitting remain. Scabbard is good but the frog is torn and poorly repaired. 4-50022 FS18 (3,500-5,500)
