GOTHIC REVIVAL CARVED WALNUT BIBLE BOX. Third quarter 19th century. The rectangular hinged lid with central rondel carved with C-scrolling Gothic elements bordering a shield carved with torches and leaf tips, the rondel within floral spandrels. The case sides with scrolling vinery and Gothic guilloches. The molded plinth with repeating carving of the lid edge. Raised on suppressed square chamfered feet. The box being sold with a copy of the Kimber & Sharpless edition of the Holy Bible, Philadelphia 1852. SIZE: 6″ h x 17″ l x 12-3/4″ d. PROVENANCE: Barnard Estate of Augusta, Maine. CONDITION: Case is in very fine structural condition. Stripped and repolished. Horizontal shrinkage crack in bottom of box, filled. 9-20996 (300-500)
