The background in green to orange. Signed in the red throw, also signed in pencil on reverse of canvas with penciled title to stretcher. Housed in a gilt stepped wood frame. The original painted frame is available. This painting is pre-1938 period. Gwathmey explored the image of the African-American throughout his career. He expressed these visions in a unique painting style that was inspired by revisionist cubism of semi-abstract, factured forms such as those found in works by Jacques Villon, Stuart Davis and Marcel Duchamp. Gwathmey, in “Nude in Rocking Chair”, takes stylistic liberties without abandoning the objects. The figure, rocking chair and dresser set within a shallow perspective become exaggerated to create interlocking geometric patterns. Applying the paint carefully and methodically, Gwathmey underscored s the semi-abstract characteristics of the work by surrounding each form with black isolating lines. “Nude in Rocking Chair” illustrated Gwathmey’s stylistic hallmarks of reconciling social content with modernist form.
