FOUR WELL FRAMED WOOLWORTH PRINTS. This interesting lot contains four reproduction prints of paintings that were contained in the Woolworth Collection. All were important examples and one set the world record for an American painting at auction. Additional Provenance: The following information was provided by the consignor whose father acquired the two Audubon prints from the Ward Bros. Harry Chesley (1909-1991). Harry married Dorothy Todd in 1937. Dorothy was teh daughter of Captain Ira Todd of Crisfield, Maryland. Through the Todd’s, Mr. Chesley met and became friends with Lem and Steve Ward. Harry Chesley, Jr. was a sales manager for Swift & Company and national sales manager for Pabst Brewing Company. During WWII he was lieutenant colonel and executive vice president of marketing and advertising at the Phillip Morris, Co.

CIRCLE OF SIR WILLIAM BEECHEY (British 1753-1839) “GEORGE III VIEWING THE 3RD OR PRINCE OF WALES DRAGOON GUARDS AND THE 10TH OR PRINCE OF WALES LIGHT DRAGOONS”. Large and important oil on wood panel military scene shows the King mounted on horseback in military regalia flanked by other men and one standing. All in military costume. They are on a sandy bluff looking over a battle scene with opposing armies in cavalry formation. On reverse of panel is another depiction of the same scene probably a preliminary work for the finish copy. ARTHUR JOHANN A SEVERIN NIKUTOWSKI (German, 1830 – 1888) THE SUPPLY TRAIN. Interesting oil on canvas scene shows a four-horse drawn supply wagon being driven by a soldier at a fast gallop. The wagon includes livestock, barrels, and hay. On either side are two soldiers on horseback with a soldier in the background, also on horseback. Another soldier is leaving a house with the village beyond. On the right, crossing a fence is another group of soldiers which appear to be the enemy. A nice subject matter with lots of action. A variety of items adorn the scene including a bagpipe below the bench of one of the men and items hanging on the walls. Signed lower left. FEDERICO/FILIPPO BARTOLINI (Italian, 1861-1908) THE RUG MERCHANT. Outstanding watercolor Orientalist scene shows a man in colorful costume bargaining with a merchant who is seated next to one of the shop keepers displaying a colorful striped fabric. A Persian Oriental rug rests on a colorful taberet stand. Beyond the merchant is a busy street scene with other merchants and perspective buyers against a series of stucco buildings. All under blue sky. Signed bottom right. Housed in what appears to be its original shell decorated frame with inner liner that is bright gold which indicates this was probably under glass for some time. Both woman appear somewhat dejected with their heads sagging forward spellbound by the old woman. GEORGE HENRY BOUGHTON (American, 1833-1905) “INDIFFERENCE”. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a flower, and grass covered field with two ladies in colorful dress with parasols and bonnets. They walk past a gentleman in blue long-tail formal coat with white pants and white top hat. Nine white ducks are seen between them and beyond the ducks are nine figures which are playing a ball game, possibly cricket or baseball. The hillside background supports a large multi-chimney house with light reflecting in the windows. Signed lower left. Housed in its original gilt gesso decorated frame with wooden painted name tag which has title, artist and the following poem “When my hair is gray, then shall I be wise then, thank heaven I shall not care for bronze brown eyes.” SIZE: 18-1/4” x 36-1/4”. ROBERT GWATHMEY (AMERICAN, 1903 – 1988) “NUDE IN ROCKING CHAIR”. Oil on canvas interior modernist scene shows a nude African-American female seated in a black spool-decorated rocker with a red cloth throw. She is resting her head on one of her hands, the other hand holds a red slipper which has been removed from her left foot. A white end table is seen in the background with a vase of flowers. The background in green to orange. Signed in the red throw, also signed in pencil on reverse of canvas with penciled title to stretcher. Housed in a gilt stepped wood frame. The original painted frame is available. This painting is pre-1938 period. Gwathmey explored the image of the African-American throughout his career. He expressed these visions in a unique painting style that was inspired by revisionist cubism of semi-abstract, factured forms such as those found in works by Jacques Villon, Stuart Davis and Marcel Duchamp. Gwathmey, in “Nude in Rocking Chair”, takes stylistic liberties without abandoning the objects. The figure, rocking chair and dresser set within a shallow perspective become exaggerated to create interlocking geometric patterns. Applying the paint carefully and methodically, Gwathmey underscored s the semi-abstract characteristics of the work by surrounding each form with black isolating lines. “Nude in Rocking Chair” illustrated Gwathmey’s stylistic hallmarks of reconciling social content with modernist form. UNSIGNED (American, Mid 20th Century) THE NUTCRACKER SUITE. Unframed oil on canvas mounted to plywood holiday festive scene shows a young girl watching a small hand cranked puppet show which has just been opened from a gift box on Christmas day. The interior room shows a Christmas tree laden with gifts and a formal living room with fireplace, mantle accessories and furniture. A pull horse toy is in the foreground and two large swinging French doors flank the scene. The parents look from above.
