ANGLO-INDIAN LIGNUM VITAE AND IVORY SEWING BOX. Second half 19th century. The rectangular box with serpentine edges opening to a compartmented interior with nine lids. Each decorated with various designs of ivory inlay. The lid with a centrally inlaid elephant above the word “MATARA”, denoting a city in modern day Sri Lanka. SIZE: 5-1/4″ h x 12-1/2″ w x 8-3/4″ d. CONDITION: The box retains original surfaces with damage to proper left rear lid corner. Many pieces of circular inlay have fallen out, many of which remain in the box. 9-98411 (200-300)
