This comes from a local central Maine home where family history indicates it possibly could be a village along the St. John River in Northern Maine. EARL CUNNINGHAM (American, 1893-1977) A TROPICAL PARADISE. Unsigned oil on panel shows a land and seascape with tropical features. Two sections of land are separated by water thoroughfare. The right section of land has tall wide trunk trees and small evergreens, a few having colorful flowers. The ground is covered in high colorful grass and there is a brown, tan and black house with chimney. Four white egrets are seen along with three pink flamingos. There is a dock with figure, a boat on dry cradle, a man rowing a small rowboat and two ducks. The left section of land has similar trees with the addition of what appear to be palm trees. A longer house is seen with dock and man in rowboat. The background has brightly colored yellow/gold sky which reflects in far water and down the thoroughfare. Housed in a painted wood frame. This outstanding oil on canvas was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York City, 1936; National Arts Club, 1937; Plainfield Art Association, 1937; Mont Clarie N.J. Museum 1937 and Wilmington Society of Art, 1943 where it received 2nd popularity vote (this is inscribed on back of canvas). Also titled, signed and dated 1935 on back of canvas. The portrait is of Elizabeth Joyce Joslin of Norway, Maine and her Siamese cat. It shows the young girl seated in a blue chair with teal colored curtain backdrop. William Leroy Jacobs was an American Illustrator, known today for his cityscapes, figurative drawings and paintings. HENRY JOHN BODDINGTON (English, 1811-1865) A SUMMER’S REST. Outstanding oil on canvas summer landscape shows a shepherd with young girl and dog seated next to a large fallen tree. 11 sheep are laying and standing around the tree in a grass covered area surrounded by ferns and wildflowers. Beyond them is a huge old tree with forest beyond. The right side having a lower meadow with flock of sheep and fence leading to river with banks having large trees. Across the river is seen more fields leading to low hills. This scene is presented under a detailed blue and wispy cloud sky. Signed bottom right “H.J. Boddington 1843″. Housed in what appears to be its original double frame liner with artist plaque. An outstanding example of this British artist’s work. SIZE: 24″ x 36”. SIR JOHN HOPPNER R.A. (British, 1758-1810) “PORTRAIT OF LADY CHARLOTTE PERCY, COUNTESS OF ASHBURNHAM”. Large oil on canvas portrait of an elegant young woman seated in front of an outlooking alcove with landscape view. A large red drape hangs on the right and she holds a sheer lace shawl which is wrapped around her and rests in her lap. In 1795 Lady Charlotte Percy was second wife to George Ashburnham, 3rd Earl of Ashburnham and daughter of the First Earl of Beverly. They had 13 children together. Housed in a period carved wood and gilt frame with gilt artist and sitter plaque. Two labels from Newhouse Galleries, New York are attached to back to the cardboard backing with title and artist and inventory number #15404. His portrait is described in “Dames of High Degree” by Thomson Willing as “Her portrait by Hoppner, done in his best period, was painted in 1794, and has become one of this painter’s most famous works. It was engraved by Charles Wilkin and was issued in the series of plates entitled, ” A Select Series of Ladies of Rank and Fashion.” The painter had the reputation of investing his sitters with an ideal grace and beauty without losing likeness or character. He had a plausible brush, yet his art was not akin to the emasculated style of thirty years later. In none of his subjects were elements of his style so marked as in Lady Charlotte. In her was graciousness allied with high-bred dignity;and this was the most marked characteristic of his manner”. SIZE: 50-1/4″ x 40″. SIR HENRY RAEBURN R.A. (British, 1756-1823) PORTRAIT OF “MAJOR ROBERT MCGREGOR”. Oil on canvas three quarter portrait of a military officer dressed in red waist coat with black lapels, white shirt and pants. A sword scabbard is attached to his belt and his gloved hand holds his black hat and sword while his other hand is held at waist. Green to brown background. Housed in a large gilt molded wood antique frame. Two Newhouse Gallery labels affixed to cardboard back with title, artist, etc. Appears to be unsigned. Paper on the reverse states “Major Robert McGregor in the Honorable East India Co. service was Secretary and Persian Interpreter in the field, fell at the Battle of Deli, 11 September, 1803. In uniform, holding his sword and hat in his hand. The owner of this picture was a descendant of the person represents, and the picture has never been out of the family. Raeburn received 200 pounds for painting it, and was a friend who used to visit the family at Portobello, where McGregor lived. The picture came from Norman McGregor, who until recently was living at Taunton. Probably the portrait was not known to Sir Walter Armstrong when he made his book on Raeburn as it has never been out of the possession of the family”. NOTE: Listed and illustrated in James Grieg’s Book on Raeburn confirming this painting to be by Sir Henry Raeburn. Our research indicates that a painting of this name was sold at Christies, London in 1907. Raeburn is most known for his portraits and the most recognized for “The Skating Minister”. A large brimmed black hat sits atop his blond hair and looks proudly over his recently shot collection of game. A variety of birds are piled on a rocky bluff under blue and pink cloud sky. His dog stands beside him. Signed lightly lower left “J. Weenix”. There is a round stamp on reverse of stretcher which partially reads “Luzern P-V Schwe_ _ _ ollamt”. Outstanding large oil on wood panel scene shows a man with small guitar standing atop rock and singing in front of a gathered group of men, women and children. 13 people are seated and standing attentive to his performance. The background is a fancy white manor house having a curving wall at lakeside with mountain peaks in background under blue and white cloud sky. Outstanding detail in this colorful and pleasing subject matter. Signed lower right “Philippeau 1866”. Housed in an outstanding black and gilt wood frame having a brand “M. GRIEVE CO. EMILE FRANCOIS MICHEL (French, 1818-1909) READING IN THE PARK OVERLOOKING MONACO. Outstanding large oil on canvas Mediterranean coastline scene shows a young woman seated reading a book under one of several large trees in a park like setting. Beyond her is the blue Mediterranean dotted with several sails and a point of land with the walled principality of Monaco with stucco houses having red roofs. Beyond is a low mountain coastline with snow covered mountain range in distance. All under a blue sky. Signed lower right “Em. Michel 1899″. Michel is well represented in European museums and wrote extensively on art including a book on the life and works of Rembrandt. He was elected a member of the Institute of France (Academie des Beaux-Arts; #2, Section VI-Unattached members) in 1892. AIME JULES DALOU (French, 1838-1902) SCIENCE AND THE ARTS. Outstanding pair of bronze plaques. One depicting the sciences showing a clothed woman standing on a step in a shell topped alcove with globe, protractor and chemist bottle at her feet. She holds a compass in one hand, the other under chin. The second depicts a semi-nude woman standing in an identical alcove strumming a lyre at her hip and having an artist pallet, and music score at her feet. Signed lower left. UNSIGNED (European, Circa 1900) GODDESS OF WINE. Modeled as a female seated nude wearing a crown of grape vines, clutching a goblet in her left hand, supporting her resting head. She grasps a cluster of grapes in her extended right hand. Her legs are crossed, left leg against a spilled wine vessel. She is reclining against a leafy knoll on a discarded robe, the whole raised on a socle. SIZE: 15-1/2″ h x 13-1/2″ w overall x 11-1/2″ d overall. THEODORE BAUR (1835-1894) THE CHARGING BUFFALO. Second half 19th century. Accompanied by an excerpt from a book which indicates the Meriden Britannia Company commissioned Baur to execute this sculpture especially for the Centennial where it received great acceptance and was later exhibited in many other late 19th Century exhibitions. Signed in script “Theo Baur” under the right rear haunch, with no apparent foundry mark, this realistic rendition depicting a buffalo with lowered head, preparing to charge. SIZE: Buffalo measures 10 1/2″ high, 17 3/4″ in length and the plinth measures 3/4″ high, 15″ in length, width 6 1/2″ CONDITION: With original surfaces and fine gold-brown patina, mounted on an original green marble plinth. Swiveling on a conforming sockle. Sold together with a classical form marble pedestal, having a rotating capital above a fluted column with a stepped base. LEVON WEST (American, 1900-1968) “THE MIDNIGHT RETREAT”. This print depicts General George Washington’s retreat across the Delaware River on December 7, 1776, during the Revolutionary War. At the top, Washington and Colonel Glover, both on horseback, watch over the nighttime crossing from the dark shoreline as a third man holds a torch. In the foreground, a boat full of soldiers gets under way, while another boat ferries a cannon toward the horizon. This print was part of The Bicentennial Pageant of George Washington, a suite of 20 etchings, each by a different artist, depicting scenes from Washington’s life.
