POLITICAL SATIRE FOLK ART CARVING. First quarter 20th century. The satirical carving titled “WILSON’S ACHIEVEMENTS APRIL 1917-1921”. Carved depicting a double grave with headstone beneath trees titled “VICTIMS OF A SCANDALOUS HISTORY”. The headstone reading “HERE REST U.S. INNOCENT”, the gravestone lid sliding open to reveal a tin-lined receptacle for ashes beside a building carved with title “THE DECEIVED COUNTRY-HOUSE” above a name plate engraved “AGAINST THE PEOPLE”. The purpose of the “house” is that is serves as a cigarette dispenser. Upon lifting the roof and walls by sliding upward a cigarette is deposited on the center board when the house is lowered again. SIZE: 7-1/4″ h x 9-1/2″ l x 6″ d. CONDITION: Generally good with old and original surfaces. At peak of building’s roof appears to be the remnants of a handle. 7-70034 (700-900)
