TWO NEW ENGLAND BANISTER-BACK CHAIRS IN BLACK PAINT. Late 18th, early 19th century, New England. Armchair with double arched lollipop crest flanked by turned spindles headed by onion knops. Shaped arms with rolled grips centering trapezoidal woven seat. Stiles and arm support continuing to cylindrical legs joined by double box stretcher. Second example, a side chair, with arched crestrail flanked by blocked and baluster turned stiles headed by bell shaped finials centering four reverse split banister splats above woven trapezoidal seat joined to blocked and turned frontal legs. Rear legs square. All joined by pronounced swelled box stretcher terminating in button feet. SIZE: Armchair: 45-1/2″ h. Side chair: 46″ h. CONDITION: Armchair, each leg with 6-1/2″ replacement at bottom, otherwise good. Side chair structurally very good overall. Woven seat in need of replacement. 9-25601 (600-800)
