ALTON S. TOBEY (American 1914-2005) PORTRAITS OF JUDGE EDWARD D. CUTLER (1849-1931) AND LILLIAN M. CUTLER (1871-1967). 1) Oil on masonite portrait of a distinguished gentleman, 3/4 view, sitting in a Chippendale armchair. He sits in his law library with finger holding a page in a book held in his lap. He wears a black suit with brown tie and white shirt. Signed lower right. Dated “41”. Housed in an outstanding pierced decorated gilt frame marked “N.M. Co (Newcomb Macklin Company)”. 2) Oil on masonite, 3/4 view, portrait of a woman seated in a Chippendale armchair. She is seated against a printed wallpaper background. She wears a black dress with lace trim. She also wears a graduated pearl necklace and gold and diamond ring. Signed upper left and dated “1940”. Housed in a fine gilt gesso decorated frame, marked “N.M. Co (Newcomb Macklin Company)”. Judge Cutler was very active in Democratic politics in Schenectady, NY. He was an elected member of the States Assembly from 1884-1888 and was appointed County Judge in Schenectady by Governor Hill in 1889, later elected as Judge where he served until 1897.
