DESIGN PAINTING OF THE EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS STEAM LOCOMOTIVE. Circa 1910. This lifelike rendering of the New York Central Railroad No 999 Steam Engine Locomotive painted on a mahogany plaque including specifications painted in the upper left hand corner. The artist’s initials “JWE 1910” painted in lower right hand corner, the reverse with a label identifying the artist as “John W. Elder / 113 E. 118th St. / N.Y.C. / Industrial Model Builder”. John Wallace Elder (1872-1954). Born in Ireland, emigrated to Canada and then the United States in the late 19th Century. He became a master steam fitter in 1902; shop steward; master draftsman and industrial model builder during the 1920’s & 30’s at the Hunt’s Point Power house in Bronx, New York. SIZE: 11-1/2″ x 36-1/4″. CONDITION: All with original surfaces, now with slight craquelure. No restoration noted. Very good overall. 9-98525 (1,200-1,800)
